Towards Next Generation Leaders on Security, Disarmament and Non-Proliferation of CBRN

The Konrad-Adenauer-Foundation and The Arab Institute for Security Studies (ACSIS) are pleased to announce the launch of the second cycle of its Next Generation Competition. The competition aims to facilitate the engagement and contribution of youth (with a focus on female young professionals) in the fields of security, arms control and strategic issues. The competition intends to empower a next generation of leaders capable of positively contributing to the security and non-proliferation debate.

The Konrad-Adenauer-Foundation and the West Asia-North Africa Institute (WANA) are organising a series of workshops which aim to support young Jordanian experts and professionals from diverse backgrounds to produce public policy papers on different subjects. In the end of the workshop series, the participants are given an opportunity and platform to present their policy papers to Jordanian and international stakeholder, including EU and government representatives and at the same time highlight important issues to them related to refugees and forced migration in the EU and West Asia-North Africa region.

Workshop for young police officers

This event is being organised in cooperation with the Arab Institute for Security Studies (ACSIS). Young Police Officers are being trained in security topics.

Study Visit to Brussels with Directors of JCCES, LCCES and WEO.

Accompanied by three directors of leading non-governmental organizations from Jordan Mona al-Alami (Jordanian Center for Civic Education Studies), Susan Arif (Women Empowerment Organization, Iraq) and Rula Mikhael (Lebanese Center for Civic Education Studies), Martin Beck travelled to a study visit to Brussels, which was organized by the KAS office in Brussels headed by Andrea Ostheimer. The participants had the opportunity to meet high-ranking figures from the European Parliament, the European Commission, the European Action Service, NATO and several important non-governmental organizations.

Media and Political Development

On September 10th, KAS Amman in cooperation with First Media Company held a roundtable discussion concerning "Media and Political". Panelist discussed the role of media in raising awareness for political developments among youth and in promoting democracy in societies.

Integration of Human Rights Concepts in the Educational Curricula

Konrad Adenauer Stiftung with the cooperation of the Women’s Studies Center at the University of Jordan and the American University of Madaba are organizing a seminar entitled “The Iraqi women's movement: Between Dictatorship, Occupation and the Struggle for Women's Rights”. The talk will be given by Professor Nadje Al-Ali-- a professor of gender. In this seminar, Professor Al-Ali will present some of the main issues and challenges facing the Iraqi women's movement historically and in present-day Iraq.

Empowering Local Governments in Jordan: Enhancing Political and Developmental Relations

between Local Governments and Local Communities

KAS Amman and the Visions Center started a series of workshops focussing on decentralisation and the role of municipalities in local development. The aim of this workshop was to increase the institutional capacity of municipalities by enhancing their coordination and cooperation with NGOs in managing local resources and developing general policies. KAS Amman and the Visions Centre, feel deeply committed to promote the capacity building of municipalities and the value of subsidiary.

The Arab Uprising and its Economic Implications on Lebanon

On June 24th, KAS Amman with the cooperation of the Lebanese Center for Policy Studies held a closed roundtable discussion that brought experts together to discuss “The Arab Uprising and its Economic Implications on Lebanon”. Panelists tackled Lebanon economic particularities in light of many factors and the recommendations to overcome the tough economic period.

On June 24th, KAS Amman in conjunction with the Lebanese Center for Policy Studies held a closed roundtable discussion that brought experts together to discuss “The Arab Uprising and its Political Implications on Lebanon”. Panelists tackled issues including the complications of the Arab uprising on Lebanon, the formation of Miqati’s government, and the implications of Syria demonstrations.

Energy Security in the Middle East and the Gulf Region - Geopolitics, security challenges and sustainable supplies

In joint organisation with the Arab Institute for Security Studies and the Energy Research Program, the KAS Amman held a regional workshop entitled "Energy Security in the Middle East and Gulf Region - Geopolitics, Security Challenges and sustainable supplies" from July 6th - 7th. Under the auspices of the primie minister of Jordan, the panellists tackled - together with the international audience - current challenges in energy policy facing the Middle East, including the question of ensuring sustainable petroleum- and gas supplies.

In the Aftermath of the Changes: Problems and Future of Euro-Mediterranean Relations

Under the Patronage of His Royal Highness Prince Hassan bin Talal

The Arab protests have shown the motivation and will of especially young people for changes and democracy. Europe’s role in this process of democratization has the potential to make a significant difference for the future Euro-Arab relations. In light of these developments, the KAS Amman and the Royal Institute for Inter-Faith Studies held a workshop on the problems and the future of the relationship between Europe and the Middle East. A focus of the international conference was on Muslim-Jewish-Christian relations in the two regions and the promotion of inter-faith dialogue.

International Conference on Cross Cultural Education

KAS Amman Office contributed to a scientific conference organized and designed by Adyan Foundation in cooperation with Notre Dame University and other renowned academic partners. The two-day conference took place in Lebanon on June 2/3 and aimed at fostering Cross-Cultural Euromed education.

Linking Civil Society and Academia: The Relevance of Women and Gender Studies

On Friday, June 17/18, 2011 over 20 representatives of Iraqi academic institutions and leading non-governmental organizations, supported by some selected representatives of gender studies in Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey gathered in Amman, Jordan, to discuss women and gender studies.
