The Konrad-Adenauer-Foundation and The Arab Institute for Security Studies (ACSIS) are pleased to announce the launch of the second cycle of its Next Generation Competition. The competition aims to facilitate the engagement and contribution of youth (with a focus on female young professionals) in the fields of security, arms control and strategic issues. The competition intends to empower a next generation of leaders capable of positively contributing to the security and non-proliferation debate.

Jordan-EU Dialogue on Human Security:Refugees and Forced Migrants in Focus

The Konrad-Adenauer-Foundation and the West Asia-North Africa Institute (WANA) are organising a series of workshops which aim to support young Jordanian experts and professionals from diverse backgrounds to produce public policy papers on different subjects. In the end of the workshop series, the participants are given an opportunity and platform to present their policy papers to Jordanian and international stakeholder, including EU and government representatives and at the same time highlight important issues to them related to refugees and forced migration in the EU and West Asia-North Africa region.

Capacity Building for the Staff of the Ministry of Social Development Working with Charities

in the Field of Public Service Management and Communication

In recent years the public service sector has witnessed profound changes. Government agencies are increasingly dealing with complex social, economic and political matters, especially with regard to their collaboration with charities. Guaranteeing a good quality of service, the expertise of ministry staff has to be optimized. Therefore, KAS Jordan Office in cooperation with the Ministry of Social Development (MOSD) conducted three training workshops in February and March 2014 on capacity building for the staff of MOSD that works with charities.

KAS Jordan and the Ministry of Social Development (MOSD) conducted three training workshops for the staff of MOSD working with charities to optimize their skills and knowledge to ensure an efficient workflow, particularly in the administrative, financial and legal field. The trend of grassroots development was promoted which is in the interest of Jordan and the region’s stability. The workshops took place in January and February 2014 in Amman, Irbid and Aqaba.

“Societal Violence in Jordan: Reasons and Solutions”

Jordan has experienced a significant rise of societal violence during the last years, which reaches from vandalism over shootings to homicide. In order to face this dangerous grievance, KAS Jordan Office and Action on Societal Violence – KAFA organized a training workshop on 28th September 2013 to discuss the causes of this violence from different perspectives and to develop practical solutions.

“Youth Strategy to Combat Societal Violence in Jordan”

On 1st February 2014 KAS Jordan and Action on Societal Violence - KAFA hosted the publication of the “Youth Strategy to Combat Societal Violence in Jordan”. The youth initiative is the result of a workshop in 2013 developing a strategy to combat societal violence that was organised by KAS and KAFA. The strategy will last for the years 2014 – 2015 and will be implemented by youth groups who aim at decreasing societal violence in Jordan.

The Socio-Economic Implications of Syrian Refugees on the Jordanian Economy – A Cost-Benefit Framework

Since the beginning of the Syrian civil war Jordan has opened its borders to approximately 600.000 refugees which has had a tremendous impact on Jordan’s infrastructure, resources, and the labor market. Issnaad Consulting and KAS organized a workshop on 18th February 2014 to present the preliminary results of a study on the socio-economic implications of the Syrian refugees on the Jordanian economy and to further discuss the impacts in practice with national and international representatives.

Economic Empowerment for Iraqi Women and Youth

Women involvement and representation in executive positions within the Iraqi public and private sphere is substantially low, barely covered by the media and neither touched upon by public dialogue. In this context, KAS Amman and the Women Empowerment Organization organized a conference on the 5th and 6th of October 2013 in Erbil to discuss the obstacles women and youth are confronted with in the process of acquiring considerable economic competences.

Shortly before Christmas, Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung invited academics, experts and decision-makers from the three regions to discuss the current priority issues of the Middle East during a multiday symposium, held at the Dead Sea, Jordan.

The Workshop on “Youth Strategy to Combat Societal Violence in Jordan” was organized by Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung and Action on Societal Violence- KAFA. It was attended by around 45 young men and women from nine governorates of Jordan.

Violence at Jordanian Universities

Violence at Jordanian universities is a result of unresolved tensions not only at the university level, but also at the social and political level. The underlying factors behind its appearance are deepening and its implications vary. In this context, KAS Amman and Scoopat organized a workshop entitled “Violence at Jordanian Universities,” with representatives from universities, civil society, media, and the political sphere to identify the reason and discuss possible solutions.

“Gewalt in der jordanischen Gesellschaft – Gründe und Lösungsansätze”

Während der letzten Jahre erlebte Jordanien einen signifikanten Anstieg gesellschaftlicher Gewalt, welche von Vandalismus über Schießereien bis hin zu Mord reicht. Um diesem gefährlichen Missstand zu begegnen organisierte die KAS Amman zusammen mit der Non-Profit-Organisation Action on Societal Violenc – KAFA am 28. September 2013 ein Seminar, welches die Ursachen dieser Gewalt aus unterschiedlichen Perspektiven diskutierte und anschließend praktische Lösungsansätze erarbeitete.
