Details

The conference will bring experts from across the continent to share their perspectives of public broadcasting from their corner of the continent. Conversations will explore various topics- such as the role of public broadcasters in African countries, the need to regain credibility and independence and appealing to the new generation’s interest in public broadcasting.

Public service broadcasting has entered a transformation era in delivering news and information in Africa. Technologically advanced communities can now not only listen to news but be a part of the interactions through streaming platforms. Part of the reason is that multimedia transcends infrastructure deficits and overcomes language barriers.

Given such extensive reach, the importance of the public service broadcasting on the continent is obvious. It has audiences in urban and rural areas and cuts across economic and political lines. In some places, what is meant to be public service broadcasting only churns out state propaganda or serves as a source of government news. Meanwhile, some channels would choose or appear to be partisan when, in the main, their role is to inform and educate the public.
