Disinformation and fake news have become major challenges in the digital age, with social media networks acting as key facilitators of their spread. Tackling this issue requires stronger regulation of digital platforms. While Germany has implemented the Network Enforcement Act (NetzDG) since 2017, and the European Union introduced the Digital Services Act and Digital Markets Act in 2023, African countries remain hesitant to regulate platforms due to concerns over large tech companies. Striking the right balance between regulation and freedom of expression remains a complex issue.
KAS Media Africa will host a dialogue programme from the 2nd to 6th of June 2025 in Berlin and Brussels, to bring together African and European experts to share knowledge and experiences on regulating digital platforms as well as on further measures against the spread of disinformation. The KAS Media Programme for Sub-Saharan Africa supported the establishment of the Pan-African Network of Independent Press Councils (NIMCA) in 2024. This programme aims to foster dialogue and collaboration, helping to strengthen independent self-regulatory bodies for journalism in Africa.
