From 8 to 9 September 2026, the KAS Media Programme Sub-Saharan Africa will support the SOS Public Service Media Symposium in Johannesburg, South Africa.
The two-day symposium will bring together media practitioners, policymakers, civil society representatives, and regional experts to discuss the future of public service media (PSM) in an evolving digital landscape. The event will provide a platform for dialogue on key challenges such as financial sustainability, governance, digital transformation, and editorial independence, with a particular focus on the South African context.
The first day will centre on the role and future of the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC), addressing issues related to policy reform, funding models, programme development, and public trust. The second day will broaden the perspective to the African continent, focusing on strengthening public media advocacy, sharing comparative insights from Southern African countries, and fostering regional collaboration.
By convening diverse stakeholders, the symposium aims to advance practical solutions, strengthen advocacy networks, and reinforce the role of public service media as a cornerstone of democratic societies across Africa.
