Studio Talk: More Quality for Bulgarian Media

by Christian Spahr
Bulgarian media, over all, did not have particular preferences for certain candidates during the parliamentary election campaign - which was a positive aspect. However, the coverage of the campaign was polarized and factual political issues were dealt with superficially. Better conditions seem to be necessary for more quality in political journalism.

The media landscape was not determined to certain political party’s point of view. In the same time, there was a lack of in-depth discussions on the situation in Bulgaria. This was the conclusion of media expert Orlin Spassov and Christian Spahr, head of KAS Media Program South East Europe, on May 25 in the talk show ‘Journalist’s Club’ on the Bulgarian National Radio. Spassov’s Foundation ‘Media Democracy’ and KAS conducted a study, in which they analyzed political journalism in the country. Spassov and the Managing Director of the Bulgarian Publishers Association, Radomir Tcholakov, pleaded for better journalists’ working conditions. Among other aspects, they pointed out the lack of a specialized print media law, which defines rights of journalists and rules for the media market in a transparent way. The KAS Media Program South East Europe had initiated this debate last year and brought together German and Bulgarian media experts to discuss on the issue. The talk within ‘Journalist’s Club’ focused also on better conditions for journalistic education in South East Europe – another objective of KAS. The new director of the Bulgarian National Radio, Radoslav Yankulov, who also took part in the program, announced further efforts in this field.

The talk show discussion is now available in Bulgarian on the internet.
