City, Countryside, ... Differences?

Political Attitudes from Big Cities to Rural Areas - Results from Representative Surveys

Voting behavior reflects clear urban-rural differences: The CDU/CSU and the AfD score higher in rural areas, while the Green party does better in urban areas. How can these effects be explained? Using representative survey data, our study shows that urban-rural differences in party sympathies and slight differences in political attitudes could provide an explanation for the different electoral success of the parties according to urban-rural areas.

Results from a representative survey on artificial intelligence

Artificial intelligence (AI) has not yet become part of everyday life for many. Elderly and respondents with a lower level of education are particularly unfamiliar with AI applications. The differences are presumably due to the fact that younger people and respondents with a high level of formal education can make use AI in their professional context. Technology, digitalization and AI are not perceived as a promise, but also not as a threat. Abstract With the spread of applications based on artificial intelligence (AI), the digitalization of society has reached a new level. A representative survey conducted by the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung examines how AI is perceived and evaluated by the general population.

Health and Psychosocial Effects Evolving from Cannabis Legalisation and Commercialisation

Cannabis legalization at the expense of children and young people

Cannabis legalization leads to an increase in consumption. In addition, the risk perception of harmful effects decreases due to the easier availability of cannabis. Harmful effects include impaired concentration and memory, apathy, anxiety, depressive and schizophrenic disorders. Legalization in Germany is an experiment that is being carried out on the backs of children and young people for the benefit of robust luxury consumers.

Changing political attitudes

Results from three representative trend surveys

The study shows changes in the population's political attitudes between December 2022 and December 2023. How have satisfaction with democracy and trust in institutions developed? How optimistic are citizens about the future? How do citizens position themselves on the left-right axis? And how are these attitudes related to the level of formal education? The study investigates these questions with the help of three representative surveys, each conducted six months apart.

Still others are only moderately interested in the EU, but suspect benefits for Germany. And then there are the weary, who distrust European politics and could well do without the EU. The representative survey by the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung examines the variety of views on the EU.

Relief through an allowance in statutory health insurance

In light of demographic changes that inevitably increase pressure on our social security system, an unstoppable rise in social insurance contributions looms unless decisively counteracted with reforms. Especially low-income households, which already bear a disproportionately high financial burden relative to their income, are under this strain. Consequently, there is a need for targeted relief for these households directly within the framework of social insurances, rather than through tax deductions. An allowance in statutory health insurance could significantly reduce the burden for employees subject to social insurance. To keep the costs of the reform manageable, it seems sensible to grant allowances only to a precisely defined target group.

Generation Corona? Youth and (mental) health

The pandemic is drawing attention on pre-existing mental health challenges faced by young people.

Even before the outbreak of the pandemic, a large number of 11- to 17-year-olds were experiencing psychological and psychosomatic problems that significantly impair everyday life. 40 to 50 percent report sleep disorders, irritability, headaches, back pain and abdominal pain. During the pandemic, these symptoms intensified and persisted at elevated levels even after they subsided. In adolescent medicine, there are currently warnings of a consolidation of mental disorders and speak of a "mental health pandemic".
