Newly elected US President Donald J. Trump submitted his first draft budget on 16 March 2017. In addition to important increases in the defense budget, cutbacks were announced to the draft budgets for the departments of foreign and environmental affairs. In particular, the proposed cuts to the State Department budget could have a significant impact on the work of the United Nations as the United States is currently the greatest individual donor to the UN as a whole. This explains why the latest announcements from Washington have been met with great concern on the East River.

On March 14th, Member of the German Bundestag Ursula Groden-Kranich, visited the new KAS office in New York for a breakfast briefing. She was in New York to attend the sixty-first session of the Commission on the Status of Women which took place at the United Nations Headquarters from 13 to 24 March 2017. The breakfast briefing, which was co-organized together with the American Council on Germany (ACG) focused on gender equity in a changing work environment. Ms. Groden-Kranich shared her insights on the topic and made clear why it is still necessary to fight the gender gap.

Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung opened new office in New York

On January 23, the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung opened its New York office in the historic News Building in midtown - with a great view towards the UN headquarters. The opening ceremony was held in presence of Ambassador Professor Harald Braun, Permanent Representative of Germany to the United Nations, high ranking representatives of the UN, Jewish organizations in the U.S. and political think tanks. Gerhard Wahlers, Deputy Secretary General of the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung, stressed the great importance of the new location for the international work of the foundation.
