The voice of the High Representative remains critical at the national, regional and international levels. In October, the Security Council holds its semi-annual debate on BiH and is also expected to vote on the reauthorisation of the European Union-led multinational stabilisation force (EUFOR ALTHEA) prior to its 1 November expiration. Further, 30 years after the signing of the Dayton Peace Agreement and genocide in Srebrenica, Bosnia and Herzegovina continues to face political instability and challenges to the implementation of the High Representative’s mandate.
The high-level breakfast discussion provided a first-hand briefing by the High Representative on current developments as well as pending challenges in Bosnia and Herzegovina and generated conversation among representatives of UN Permanent Missions, think tanks, UN officials and civil society organizations.
The developments in BiH raise important implications for the future of European security, integration of the European Union, and vitally for upholding the norms of territorial integrity and international law.
