Digital Sovereignty

Establishing policies and laws to govern social and digital media has been a challenging task for the last few years. While a need for clear rules is hardly debated, it has proven difficult for lawmakers to reduce the spread of fake news without reducing the freedom of speech at the same time. Social networks seem to be overwhelmed with the responsibility of keeping their platforms free of hate speech, facing thousands of different dialects and very different cultural contexts in the process. After the attack on the Capitol, they have shown a new determination in their approach by banning Donald Trump from their services. While the move was widely supported, it left some observers uneasy about the uncontrolled power with which social media companies are able to silence anybody who uses their platforms within seconds.

On January 27, the three regional programmes of Konrad Adenauer Stiftung which are based in Singapore – Rule of Law, Media and Political Dialogue – are coming together to discuss the consequences of these developments for Asia. We would cordially like to invite you to join our live event “Digital Sovereignty. Laws and Policies to govern Digital Media and Social Media in Asia”, which will take place from 7.30 pm at Hotel Conrad Centennial. We are looking forward to hear the perspectives of Dr Carol Soon, Malavika Jayaram and Prof Ang Peng Hwa, and we are delighted to be able to meet you again in person – even if under strict safe distancing measurements.
