Today, Saudi Arabia is Germany’s second most important trading partner in the region, while Germany is the third largest importer to Saudi Arabia.

In Vorbereitung des G20-Gipfels im Juli 2017 in Hamburg besuchte Angela Merkel vom 30. April bis zum 01. Mai Saudi-Arabien und die Vereinigten Arabischen Emirate (VAE). Die Bundeskanzlerin traf unter anderem mit dem saudischen König Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, dem saudischen Kronprinzen Mohammed bin Nayef, dem Vizekronprinzen Mohammed bin Salman sowie dem Kronprinzen der VAE Scheich Mohammed bin Zayed al Nahyan zusammen. Kernthemen waren die Konflikte im Jemen und Syrien sowie die bilaterale Kooperation auf verschiedenen Ebenen.
