Conference: Environmental Rule of Law - Rule of Law Programme Middle East and North Africa
Expert conference
Details
The concept of Environmental Rule of Law connects environmental needs with the elements of the Rule of Law, as one conditions the other: a strong Rule of Law ensures and supports the protection of natural ressources, while an endandered climate poses a threat to democracies.
With the Stockholm Declaration of 1972, the way was paved for an interdisciplinary discurse over environmental law. Many questions come to mind: What are the main legal tools put in place on a local, regional and international level to foster the environmental protection? Have they proven to be effective? What are the specific regional challenges when it comes to the implementation of Environmental Rule of Law?
When exploring and analyzing these questions and notions, a holisitic perspective requires to take into account key issues such as migration, digital transformation, as well as fundamental and human rights.
The Rule of Law Programme Middle East and North Africa of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS), in cooperation with the International Center for Human Sciences (CISH), UNESCO - Byblos, will organize a one-day regional conference about ‘Environmental Rule of Law’ that will encompass and reflect on the abovementioned questions in a Middle East perspective through various formats.
This event will consist of three sessions featuring national and international experts. The conference will begin at 9 AM on Wednesday, 21st of September 2022 at the CISH premises in Byblos and in person. At the end of the day, a “3D cube model” will be inaugurated. This model will be used in future exhibitions in different events throughout the country. It will be publicly shown at the CISH terrace.
