Event reports
On the 16th of February, the President of the Constitutional Council Dr. Issam Sleiman awarded Mr. Peter Rimmele, Head of the Rule of Law Program Middle East/North Africa, for his contributions to the cooperation with the Constitutional Council and the steady support of the Council’s work.
The honors were presented at a press conference that was held for the publication of the 2016 annual report of the Constitutional Council of the Lebanese Republic and a study supported by Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS).
The Constitutional Council's Yearbook includes decisions as well as publications on specific constitutional issues in Arabic and French language, and provides information on the work of the Constitutional Council from the last year. In close cooperation with the KAS a publication in French language entitled "Expansion of the powers of the Lebanese Constitutional Council" was publicized at the press conference as well. It contains numerous suggestions for assessing the remaining shortcomings in the area of the rule of law and judiciary in Lebanon and the very limited competencies of the Constitutional Council for the benefit of the Lebanese population.
The award presented by the Constitutional Council is understood by the KAS as an appeal for the future to continue the ongoing work and to actively support the judiciary and in particular the Constitutional Council in Lebanon.
The cooperation with the Constitutional Council will be continued by Dr. Anja Schoeller-Schletter, who will be taking over as the Head of the Rule of Law Program Middle East / North Africa from April 2017 onwards. The ceremony gave Dr. Schoeller-Schletter a first stage for introduction in order to lay the foundation for flourishing future cooperation.
