Nigeria: Chibok girl rescued
There seemed to be light at the end of a dark tunnel when the first of 219 missing Chibok girls was rescued by the Nigerian military. The infamous Chibok girls are a group of Nigerian schoolgirls abducted by Boko Haram, a terrorist militant group in Nigeria. They are still missing two years later. The military reports that it has leads and has moved into the forest to search for the missing girls.
South Africa: Prosecutor to appeal court order to reinstate corruption charges against Jacob Zuma
Following a court order that termed the National Prosecution Authority’s decision to drop 783 corruption charges against Jacob Zuma ‘irrational’, the South African State Prosecutor says he will appeal against this judgment. He stated that the law grants a prosecutor discretion to take such action and that the court decision undermined the powers of the prosecution authority.
Political crisis in DRC deepens
A political crisis looms in the Democratic Republic of Congo as plans for elections scheduled in December are deemed unrealistic. This comes as a result of the government effectively boycotting the organization of elections by not taking action to ensure the elections are carried out on time. If the elections don’t take place during the scheduled period, the term of the president, Joseph Kabila, would be extended beyond the constitutional limits to a third term. This occurrence would likely see DRC plunge back into civil war.
Burundi peace talks take place in Tanzania
Burundi has faced a year long crisis after President Nkurunzinza began serving his third term in office resulting in the opposition denouncing his presidency as unconstitutional. The escalation of this conflict has seen more than 450 people dead and thousands more fleeing the country. On 21st May, Tanzania began peace talks in Arusha with the objective of ending the crisis. However, the process was weakened, as many opposition leaders were not present.
