Last Sunday, President Robert Mugabe vowed to reject a draft constitution that does not reflect views gathered during a public outreach campaign marred by violence and intimidation.
He said that, the problem is because, it is not the views of the population, and he would reject it.
President Mugabe accused Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai of seeking to manipulate the draft constitution to gain advantage at the next elections.
"I think some of the issues are just their own ideas that were slotted in by those who thought this would help them as parties, but did not come from the outreach programme".
At the same time, he his rejecting the Southern African Development Community (SADC) proposition of appointing President Zuma as a facilitator in the Zimbabwe political crisis. Under the terms of their power sharing deal before elections can be held three governing parties must first implement agreements.
President Mugabe claimed that the elections would be held this year with or without the reforms, because the 2009, coalition government had become dysfunctional. And he added that his Zanu-PF party might be forced to reject President Zuma as mediator.
According to him, President Zuma was mediating on behalf of SADC and rejecting his mediation role would not affect relations between Zimbabwe and South Africa.
Facilitate dialogue
President Mugabe said, “Facilitators that we were given are leaders selected on the basis of their standing to assist a country that has differences so that the country can find a common ground and resolve its differences,”. Again: “Facilitators do not carry the name of their home country to the countries they would be facilitating”.
