Presidential Elections in Gambia
Yahya Jammeh was re-elected for another five-year term in the just concluded presidential elections in Gambia.
The Gambian Electoral Commission declared Yahya Jammeh the winner by 72% of the total vote.
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) decided not to send observers because of what it termed as ‘unfavourable conditions to guarantee free, fair and transparent elections".
Bolaji Akinyemi, former Nigerian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Head of the Commonwealth Observers however, hailed the absence of violence and intimidation during the campaign period and the work of the Electoral Commission to ensure free and fair elections.
Foukam Samuel, head of the observer mission of the African Union (AU), also hailed the vote as "fair, transparent and credible”
