Opposition candidate Winston Tubman made good his threat to boycott the run-off with the incumbent president Ellen Johnson Sirleaf following violence that erupted on Monday 7th November 2011, just a day before the elections.
Earlier in the campaigns to the run-off, Mr. Winston Tubman had called for a boycott of the vote by the Liberians for what he termed as ‘fraud’.
The Tuesday vote which was largely peaceful was marred by low turnout with many people opting to stay away for fear of violence. Nevertheless, there have been allegations and counter-allegations from the security agencies and Mr. Tubman’s camp on a plot to assassinate key opposition leaders including Mr. Tubman himself and Mr. George Weah.
With the counting already underway, it is expected that president Ellen Johnson Sirleaf will formally be declared a winner to serve for another term.
