The publication, “Religion, Politics and Globalization-Implications for Thailand and Asia”, contains the accounts of the international seminar in Bangkok co-organized by the KAS and the Assumption University in June 2009. The volume examines the interplay between religions, politics and globalization. It contains a contemporary analysis of the interrelation in shaping cultures and countries politics as well as global phenomenon that redefined the custom of the world in 21st centuries.

The 14th ASEAN Summit: Fighting the Global Economic Crisis and Fostering Human Rights

The 14th ASEAN Summit took place from 28 February to 1 March 2009in Cha-am/Hua Hin, Thailand. Thailand is the present chair of ASEAN. Originally the summit was scheduled for December 2008 but had to be postponed due to domestic turmoil in Thailand.

Hundertausend Menschen demonstrieren gegen die Regierung
Mit der Forderung nach „echter Demokratie“ setzen Demonstrationen der „Rothemden“ das normale Leben in der Hauptstadt Thailands teilweise außer Kraft. Mit der bisher größten Protestbewegung fordern arme Bevölkerungsschichten aus den ländlichen Regionen Thailands die „Rückgabe der Macht an das Volk“. Die Regierung ist paralysiert. Ein Ende der Demonstrationen ist bislang nicht abzusehen.

Bilanz des Thailändischen ASEAN-Vorsitzes

Ende Juli 2008 übernahm Thailand für eineinhalb Jahre den Vorsitz im Verband der Südostasiatischen Nationen (ASEAN). Eine ehrenvolle Aufgabe für das stolze Königreich, die aber auch mit vielen Herausforderungen und großer Verantwortung einherging. Nach der Übergabe des Vorsitzes an Vietnam Ende 2009 fällt die Bilanz für Thailand eher durchwachsen aus.

Ein neuer Senat für Thailand

Thailand baut seine institutionelle Infrastruktur für Demokratie und Rechtsstaatlichkeit weiter aus. Am 2. März haben die Thailänder die Hälfte der Senatoren für das Oberhaus gewählt. Bereits im Dezember 2007 hatte das südostasiatische Land nach 15 Monaten Militärherrschaft Parlamentswahlen abgehalten und war damit formaljuristisch zur Demokratie zurückgekehrt.
