Thailand’s Smart Cities

Framework and Practice in three Provinces (Nakhonsawan, Phitsanulok, and Chiang Mai)

The study "Thailand’s Smart Cities: Framework and Practice in three Provinces (Nakhonsawan, Phitsanulok, and Chiang Mai)", which the Konrad Adenauer Foundation in Thailand and the Institute for Democratization Studies (IDS) worked on together, will focus on three potential smart cities: Chiang Mai, Phitsanulok, and Nakhonsawan. They fulfill Thailand’s development priorities of making the country “smart” through an approach based on sustainability, digital economy, and the development of modern urban centers.

In this publication, the contributing academics focus on three core elements of smart cities: smart economy, smart people, and smart governance. Their analysis was informed, among other things, by discussions between stakeholders and experts, which were organized by the IDS and the KAS throughout 2021, and also research conducted in the three cities. The publication contains several tools to implement smart city projects ranging from the study of national development plans, contextual and literature reviews, statistical and data analysis, qualitative analysis from in-city meetings and public hearings, to perspectives on economic growth and policy recommendations.

The KAS Thailand and the IDS have been working on Smart Cities since 2020 and will continue to work on this topic.
