In 2022, the National Center for Socio-economic Information and Forecast (NCIF), in cooperation with KAS, has prepared and launched the first report on the Top 500 Private Domestic Enterprises of Vietnam (VPE500). Critical findings from the report point out that the list of the 500 largest private firms in Vietnam is rather exchangeable during 2016-2020, reflecting the unstable conditions in business in that period. The issuance and findings from VPE500-2022 directly contributed to the policy making process.

Given the success of the VPE500-2022, the Vietnam Institute for Development Strategies (IDS) and Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung Vietnam co-ordinate to continuously conduct VPE500-2023 reports to provide annual information for policy makers about the performance of the private sector (depicted by the performance of the 500 largest private firms).

 Objectives

• Investigating the business performance of the VPE500 in Vietnam and the correlation of this group to the remaining economy in order to induce policy implications for business development in Vietnam.
• Updating the current enterprise census database (2016-2019) to provide the snapshot and ranking of the Top-500 VPEs in 2021 and 2022.  Identifying the VPE500 list for the recent year.
• Analysing the distribution, highlighting the change in the sector, geographic distribution and business performance of the firms in VPE500-2023 list. Updating in-depth analysis about the financial performance, productivity, technology improvement and the integration of those firms; comparative analysis with SOE and FDI firms; analysing and comparing the cooperate governance of VPE500.
• To identify the linkages and the leader/follower relationships between the VPE-Top 500 with the remaining private firms in terms of productivity and wage spill-overs.
• To investigate advantages and barriers to growth, and policy implications to facilitate those firms.​
