The discussion on 12 December 2025, “Multipolarity and the Rise of a Geopolitical Europe: ASEAN’s Strategic Choices and Thailand’s Path Forward," culminates in the proceedings. It examines implications for ASEAN and Thailand, particularly in balancing strategic autonomy with deeper cooperation across trade, digital governance, green transition, and regulatory alignment. The paper also provides an executive summary and synthesizes policy recommendations to guide Thailand’s future engagement with the EU. The discussion was organized by the Institute of Democratization Studies and received support from KAS Thailand.

Recommendations that emerged during the seminar

  • Strengthening institutional readiness and alignment with international standards: Accelerating legal and regulatory reforms, particularly in labour and environmental frameworks, to meet EU standards and enhance global competitiveness.
  • Supporting SMEs in ESG and due diligence compliance: Providing technical assistance and establishing dedicated support mechanisms to help businesses adapt to evolving regulatory requirements.
  • Advancing the EU–Thailand FTA as a national strategic priority: Framing the agreement beyond trade negotiations to include technology transfer, skills development, and local value creation.
  • Enhancing structural resilience and strategic sectors: Promoting cooperation in maritime and cybersecurity alongside investments in future industries.
  • Developing a coherent national strategic narrative: Strengthening Thailand’s global positioning through consistent and proactive communication.

The aim is to support Thailand’s strategic positioning in a multipolar world while strengthening resilience, competitiveness, and long-term partnership with the EU.
