KAS Rule of Law Programme co-organised in Bucharest a roundtable, under the No Oblivion initiative of the European Association for Social Innovation project, moderated by our colleague Alina Monceanu.
The discussion was on universal jurisdiction, justice, and collective memory. Together, we reflected on:
- How state interests influence the application (or lack thereof) of international criminal law
- The difficulty of ensuring impartial justice when there is no shared global political will
- The moral and legal duty of states to protect human rights and rule of law
- The crucial role of victims, civil society, and restorative approaches in achieving meaningful justice
The participants also took part in a role-play exercise, where they explored how difficult it is to balance law, ethics, and political context in international cases. A clear message came out of the discussion: True universal justice requires political will, but it also demands memory, moral clarity, and public engagement.
We thank all participants for their ideas and honesty. KAS RLPSEE will continue to support spaces for learning and dialogue on justice and the rule of law in the region.
