On the death of former German Chancellor Helmut Kohl, the Prime Minister of Singapore, Lee Hsien Loong, and his predecessor and current MP, Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong, expressed their condolences in two separate letters.

The Prime Minister addressed current Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany, Angela Merkel, extending his heartfelt condolences on behalf of the Singaporean government. Prime Minister Lee praised Helmut Kohl as one of the greatest statesmen in his time, a true champion of integration and as a good friend of Singapore.

Goh Chok Tong wrote to the widow, Maike Kohl-Richter, and fondly recalled the bilateral cooperation as well as numerous personal meetings. Their personal ties, the former Prime Minister wrote, were warm and the countries’ bilateral ties strong. “I will always cherish our friendship and memories.”

The original letters can be accessed via the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Singapore.
