UN Climate Finance & Sustainable Investing Conference 2019

Financing Sustainable Development / Investing for a Sustainable Future
UNESCAP co-organized with WGO a major UN conference, focusing on key Sustainability themes and Financial topics. UNESCAP sent their key representatives, including the Chief of Financing for Development Section, Macroeconomic Policy and Financing for Development Division to Hong Kong. Also, the United Nations invited key government officials globally and distinguished speakers/experts to participate in the event. With more than 40 international and local renowned speakers, the UN Conference fosters comprehensive dialogue among government officials, industry practitioners, scholars and NGOs to accelerate the paradigm shift in the sustainable investment. More importantly, this conference also aimed at facilitating changes in the decision making processes among investors and asset managers towards ESG investing. Through this established platform coupled with the network of the United Nations, extensive collaborations between institutional and private investors and project proponents are able to effectively engage among critical stakeholders towards the development of best practices for the development of Green Finance and Sustainable Investment.

The Multi-Stakeholder Dialogue on Sustainability and Digital Cooperation workshop, took place in Hong Kong, on September 12th, organized by KAS RECAP. The framework of the workshop was the recently published report by UN Secretary General’s high Panel of Digital Cooperation “The age of interdependence” https://digitalcooperation.org/, highlighting the rise of awareness coming from the UN Secretary General to consider how digital cooperation can contribute to the achievements of SDGs .

The workshop on “Carbon Markets and the Electricity Sector – Issues, Opportunities, and Priorities for East Asia” was held in Bangkok on 20 – 22 March 2019 in cooperation with Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), the International Carbon Action Partnership (ICAP) and the Thailand Greenhouse Gas Management Organization (TGO). The main topic developed was ETS and Carbon Markets in East Asia.

The 8th annual workshop on EU-China Relations in Global Politics was held this year in Singapore, dealing with dimensions of digitalisation, disruption and disruptive innovation in Europe and Asia. International professionals and academics presented insightful papers, highlighting different aspects and opportunities of digitalisation in different economic sectors in Europe and Asia. As every year, the workshop took place in the framework of UACES Collaborative Research Network on EU-China Relations, and is supported by the KAS Regional Project Energy Security and Climate Change in Asia-Pacific (KAS RECAP).

International Workshop: Fighting Deforestation

New Business Solutions for Increasing Forest Carbon Storage
Growing global deforestation is not only endangering the variety of species living in forests, but also contributes immensely to the current greenhouse gas emissions. There is a huge market resulting from cutting forests down, but are there actual economic opportunities to gain from fighting deforestation? New business solutions have to be developed to increase in forest carbon storage. The workshop held in Bangkok, Thailand, was jointly organized by KAS Regional Project on Energy Security and Climate Change in Asia- Pacific and the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research PIK.

Neue Business Modelle im Energiesektor in Zeiten der Digitalisierung

The global energy business is under tremendous pressure to reinvent itself. Three major impact factors can be identified: Digitalisation, Decarbonisation and Decentralisation. All types of business operations will be affected – also beyond the traditional energy business. To manage these challenges, new skill, organisational culture and technological knowledge are needed. On invitation of ESSCA School of Management Shanghai, Dr Peter Hefele, Director KAS RECAP, presented main findings of a recent KAS RECAP study on Digitalisation of Global Energy Systems [https://www.kas.de/web/energie-klima-lateinamerika/single-title/-/content/geopolitik-erneuerbarer-energien-in-lateinamerika-eine-umfrage]. He emphasized on the cross-sectoral effects and the need for a better regulatory framework, to maximize the economic and social gains through digitalized energy systems. Enhancing the resilience of digitalized infrastructure and channeling funds into a green transition are further priorities of national and global politics.

Seminar on Sustainable Development Policy

Dr. Francesch-Huidobro, Principal Consultant, Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung Regional Project Energy Security and Climate Change Asia-Pacific, gave expert lectures on sustainable development politics and policy to a group of Senior Officials of the Ministry of Public Administration of Bangladesh attending an executive training programme in Hong Kong.  Dr. Francesch-Huidobro shared her expertise on the challenges brought about by having to apply global sustainability norms to local needs. She illustrated her lectures with examples of energy security and climate change policy-making in Asia-Pacific.
