The African Journalism Educators' Network (AJEN) held its 4th annual conference starting on 3 of September at the University of Media, Arts and Communication in Accra, Ghana. This year’s theme - “Journalism Education Today: Embracing Change, Affirming the Basics, and Shaping the Future” - established the tone for a programme of panel vibrant discussions, breakout sessions and strategic dialogue.
Opening the event, Hendrik Sittig, Director of the KAS Regional Media Programme for Sub-Saharan Africa, emphasised the importance of skilled journalists who are able to navigate the technological challenges presented by digital advancement.
During the AJEN Conference, journalism educators shared their experiences of working in Ghana, Zimbabwe, Somalia, Tanzania, Rwanda, Uganda and Nigeria as well as Sweden, Zambia and Liberia. Lecturers from universities in Kenya, Germany and South Africa were also represented and gave insights on recent projects in journalism education.
An important part of the conference was the Adenauer Media Lecture. For more information, see here.
Following successful meetings in Johannesburg, Kigali, and Nairobi, the Accra gathering continues AJEN’s mission to strengthen journalism education through peer exchange, research collaboration, and organisational development. As KAS Media Africa, we are delighted to support this event, which aims to promote media development across the continent.
