In July 2025, the city of Arusha, Tanzania, played host to the First Pan-African Media Councils’ Summit - a significant milestone in the growing movement to strengthen independent media regulation across Africa. Organised by the Media Council of Tanzania (MCT), in collaboration with the Network of Independent Media Councils of Africa (NIMCA), the East Africa Press Councils (EAPC), and the World Association of Press Councils (WAPC), the summit was supported by KAS Media Africa and UNESCO.

The summit convened representatives from independent media councils across Sub-Saharan Africa. Together, participants explored current trends and pressing challenges facing media regulation. The summit also served as a working platform for the newly established NIMCA, following its founding in 2024. As the host of the first NIMCA Secretariat, the Media Council of Tanzania played a central role in facilitating sessions and mapping the way forward for the network’s future initiatives.
