The Union of Bulgarian Journalists has called for protection of journalists' rights and free speech

The Union of Bulgarian Journalists With a Journalists' Rights Statement

The Union of Bulgarian Journalists with a strong opinion on the media law of Delyan Peevski and the violation of the rights of Bulgarian journalists. The organization has called on the members of the Parliament to "stop the bullying with Bulgarian journalism".This position is related to the first-reading of the Media Law that passed a week ago with the support of GERB, MRF and United Patriots parties. It provides for all media owners to declare information about "any funding received in the previous calendar year, its amount and justification, as well as data on the person who provided the funding", with funding being understood as any gratuitous receipt of cash or property. The union of Bulgarian journalists is deeply disappointed with the violation of the rights of journalists and freedom of speech. It is also said that a year ago the Union had submitted to the Parliamentary Committee on Culture and Media proposal for a legislative initiative that defends the journalistic profession, but there is still no answer regarding it.The journalistic organization called Peevski's Media law a "pointless bill" and added that the bill is being pushed through a clear conflict of interest for his own benefit. On Thursday, a journalistic discussion on the protection of journalists' rights and free speech will take place at 11.00 am in the building of the Union of Bulgarian Journalists in Sofia.
