Symposium

Jordan and Germany in the Middle East

Dealing with Crises and Shaping the Future

The Middle East conflict is currently going through another wave of violent escalation. This comes against the background of new dynamics in the Middle East, including recent rapprochements among several regional actors. At the same time, unresolved conflicts, like the ones related to Palestine or Syria, continue to prevent lasting stability. In addition, the global geopolitical landscape is changing with potential repercussions on both the Middle East and Europe. Considering these developments, continued and frank dialogue between Jordan and Germany is of special importance. Both countries share a history of seventy years of cooperation and have been trusted political partners. How can Amman and Berlin work together to de-escalate regional conflicts and shape a more peaceful future? How can both countries best exploit the potential of cooperation in fields of mutual interests, such as energy or skilled labor? How do Jordan and Germany define their position in the emerging new regional and global order and how could that affect their bilateral relations?

The Road to a Civil Democratic State

The Konrad Adenauer Foundation’s Jordan Office, in cooperation with the Nisan Center for Political and Parliamentary Development, has held a series of four workshops on topics presented by the government as matters of public debate. Those include King Abdullah’s Sixth Discussion paper on “Rule of Law and Civil State.” This fourth and last workshop in the series focused on the subject of the civil democratic state, the main topic of the King’s most recent discussion paper, and also dealt with the rule of law and judicial reform, subjects that developed out of the King’s paper.

Improvement of Sustainable Development Conditions in the Jordan Valley

In Jordan, one of the most arid countries in the world, droughts, heat waves, lack of rain and water scarcity are not new phenomena and the impacts of climate change are further exacerbating the problem. At the same time, the country is facing diverse economic problems. It is therefore crucial for the economic and environmental development of the country and the future of its next generations to promote a sustainable agriculture, which constitutes a main economic sector in Jordan.

The Jordanian Economy in a Strained Regional Climate

As the crises in Syria and Iraq erupted and borders have been shut down, Jordan has lost two important import-export markets. Also transit trade, connecting Lebanon and Turkey to GCC markets, has suffered significantly. In order to discuss the social and economic impacts of the crises and to identify alternatives and opportunities, KAS Jordan Office in cooperation with al-Quds Center for Political Studies organized a workshop on the 14th of November in Amman.
