Women’s Land Rights and Development in Africa: Contesting Normative and Cultural Exclusion

INTRODUCING WOMEN’S LAND RIGHTS, NORMATIVE AND CULTURAL EXCLUSION IN AFRICA

This is a 3-part online seminar that seeks to create a platform for engagement on the structural relationship between formal and informal law in Africa as relates to property rights, land in particular, and how it is allocated and dispossessed. This will be discussed from the vantage point of gender. Interrogating how gendered access to land, has been and continues to be delineated through law in post-colonial Africa. The sessions will cover inter alia co-ownership, joint-registration, equality and inheritance, budgets and the political commitment to equitable access, legal recognition of customary land tenure and women’s rights as well as women’s participation in land administration.

WEBINAR - IMPACT OF COVID-19 ON ACCESS TO JUSTICE IN EASTERN, SOUTHERN AND WEST AFRICA

This webinar will seek to monitor the impact of COVID-19 on the rule of law and human rights in Africa with particular emphasis on Access to Justice in Eastern, Southern and West Africa. Webinar on Southern Africa will be held on 3rd June 2020 between 10am - 1pm (SAT) while the one on Eastern and West Africa will be held on 4th June 2020 between 10am - 1pm (EAT).

Das südliche Afrika nach dem Wahljahr 2019

In May 2019 the African National Congress (ANC) won another, though this time unconvincing, electoral victory in South Africa. President Ramaphosa has to deal with a difficult political and economic situation after the “State Capture” of the network around former president Jacob Zuma. Ramaphosa’s “New Dawn” pledges of economic growth and anti-corruption have so far not been implemented with the desired effectiveness, not least due to intra-party disputes within the ANC. At the same time, the largest opposition party, the Democratic Alliance (DA), struggles to find a new strategy after internal disputes and the election of a new leadership which raises new questions about the role of opposition parties and coalition building.

Annual Jurists’ Conference on Technology, Development and the Rule of Law

The Conference will examine the future of the rule of law in the context of technology and development. Specifically, it will evaluate threats and challenges, identify gaps in legislative and policy frameworks with a view to suggesting plausible and practical recommendations.

HIGH-LEVEL DIALOGUE ON PROMOTING ACCOUNTABILITY FOR INTERNATIONAL CRIMES

As part of its closing ceremony, the ICTR in collaboration with KAS hosted a high-level roundtable discussions that were moderated by the ICTR Prosecutor and other high-level officials from national and international organizations. Participants included judges, attorneys general, prosecutors among others mainly from African countries that have successfully implemented the principle of complementarity through the development of meaningful accountability measures at the national level.

THE RULE OF LAW AND INVESTMENT CONFERENCE: INVESTIGATING MOTORS FOR DEVELOPMENT

The importance of promoting the rule of law as relates to investments and development has gained recognition in recent years. Promoting the rule of law requires measures to ensure adherence to the principles of supremacy of the law, equality before the law, accountability to the law, fairness in the application of the law, separation of powers, public participation in decision-making, access to information, access to justice, legal certainty, avoidance of arbitrariness, and procedural and legal transparency.

GESCHLECHTLICHE GLEICHBERECHTIGUNG IN POLITISCHEN PROZESSEN

Die diesjährige Jahreskonferenz mit dem Thema: GLEICHSTELLUNG VON FRAUEN UND MÄNNERN IN DER POLITISCHEN ARBEIT, VON DER THEORIE ZUR PRAXIS: WAS KANN AFRIKA LERNEN wurde organisiert von der ICJ -Sektion Kenia, der Nationalen Gleichstellungskommission Kenias und dem Rechtsstaatsprogramm Afrika Südlich der Sahara der KAS. Teilnehmer der Konferenz waren staatliche und nichtstaatliche Politik- und Wahlrechtsexperten, Parlamentsabgeordnete, Richter, Rechtsanwälte, Studenten und Vertreter der Zivilgesellschaft aus verschieden afrikanischen Staaten. Dr. Maureen Mwanawasa eröffnete die Konferenz.

STAKEHOLDERS’ CONFERENCE ON COMBATING CORRUPTION IN AFRICA

Stakeholders from over 10 countries on the continent convened in Cape Town, South Africa to explore possible and viable steps towards effective fight against corruption in Sub-Saharan Africa. The conference was jointly organised by the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung under the auspices of its Rule of Law Program for Sub-Saharan Africa and Accountability Now (IFAISA).

FIRST AFRICA COLLOQUIUM ON ENVIRONMENTAL RULE OF LAW

Over 160 representatives of Africa's judiciary and law enforcement authorities converged in Nairobi for the 1st Africa Colloquium on Environmental Rule of Law that was jointly organized by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the Office of the Chief Justice of Kenya, the Konrad Adenauer Foundation and the Judiciary Training Institute of Kenya (JTI).

Unter der Leitung des Rechtsstaatsprogramms für Subsahara-Afrika trifft sich die Expertengruppe jährlich , um aus afrikanischer Perspektive die aktuellen Entwicklungen bezüglich Internationaler Gerichtsbarkeit zu diskutieren und zu bewerten. Im Mittelpunkt des diesjährigen Treffens standen unter anderem die Themen Straffreiheit, Immunität von Staatsoberhäuptern und die Arbeit des Internationalen Strafgerichtshofs.

GIZ kürzt Fördermittel an Burundi im Zuge der umstrittenen dritten Amtsperiode Nkurunzizas

Die Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) hat die Ostafrikanische Gemeinschaft (EAC) dazu aufgefordert, Burundi aus allen durch die GIZ geförderten Projekten auszuschließen. Da Entscheidungen in der EAC einen Konsens erfordern, ergäben sich auch negative Folgen für die anderen Mitgliedsstaaten. Hintergrund der Fördermittelkürzungen ist die umstrittene dritte Amtsperiode des burundischen Präsidenten Pierre Nkurunziza. Auch die USA drohen mit Konsequenzen.

Auf der diesjährigen Annual Law Conference trafen ausgewählte Wissenschaftler, Politiker und weitere Interessensvertreter aus aller Welt zusammen, um das globale Phänomen Terrorismus, seine Entstehung und Lösungsstrategien zu diskutieren.

THE COST OF THE 2010 CONSTITUTION: COST ANALYSIS OF THE NEW GOVERNANCE FRAMEWORK

This paper presented by Dr. Luis Francheschi at the KAS' Haki na Sheria forum held in Nairobi on 9th July 2015 sought to interrogate the Cost of Devolution in Kenya under the new Constitutional dispensation with particular reference to its impact on the Country's public finance.

Antrag der Pan African Lawyers Union auf Aussetzung der Präsidentschaftswahlen in Burundi abgelehnt

Die Pan African Lawyers Union (PALU) und das East African Civil Society Organisation's Forum sind vor den East African Court of Justice gezogen, um die Rechtmäßigkeit einer dritten Kandidatur durch den burundischen Präsidenten Nkurunziza zu prüfen. Das Verfassungsgericht Burundis hatte einer erneuten Kandidatur zuvor zugestimmt. PALUs Antrag auf die Aussetzung der Wahl bis zur Klärung der Sache wurde vom EACJ abgelehnt. Eine Entscheidung über die Hauptgrundlage des Verfahrens steht noch aus.
