As the only Latin American participant the trained data journalist Lucas de Abreu Maia, who writes analytical articles in the fields of politics, economy and society for the renowned Brazilian daily newspaper O Estado de S. Paulo, represented Latin America's journalists on the excursion. Under the aegis of Gidon Windecker, the head of the Regional Office Gulf States, the delegation – furthermore comprising of a Chinese, an Iraqi, a Saudi, an Emirati, a Bulgarian, and a Ukrainian – enjoy in-depth and practical insights in Germany’s implementation plan for the energy transition. With this objective in mind, the guest have already visited the citizen-owned wind energy system Dirkshof close to Husum and entered into political discussions with responsible energy experts in Berlin.
Lucas Abreu Maia took part in the seminar on data journalism organised in February 2014 by the internal programme of the foundation that supports young journalists. He is one of the main people in charge of the content design of the interactive website contaRio, which analyses the city Rio de Janeiro from a big data perspective and offers new and innovative insights into the city’s structure to its readers and viewers.
