The assessment centre of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung took place in Rio de Janeiro under the presidency of the regional office Brazil on October 22th to 22nd, 2014. Dr Berthold Gees, coordinator in the department of Scholarships and Cultural Activities, led the individual interview where the candidates had to present the university programmes they plan to attend in Germany, talk about their social commitments and demonstrate their knowledge of the German language. Silvana Krause, ex alumna and professor at (Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul), Patricia Kegel, professor at (Regional University of Blumenau), and Christian Matthäus (KAS Brazil) supported Dr. Gees in the judging panel. After the individual interviews all candidates took a written German test, offered by (Goethe-Institut Rio de Janeiro).

Candidates had to qualify for the assessment centre through a written pre-selection process. Those applicants who were able to convince the jury with their character, social commitment and intellectual capacities will receive financial and non-material support over the course of their planned studies in Germany. On the occasion of the assessment centre the meeting of Brazilian KAS alumni also took place where the scholarship candidates had the opportunity to enter into dialogue with other members of the ‘KAS family’ to discuss their experiences and questions, and network.

The Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung offers scholarships for university degrees and PhDs to exceptionally talented and performance-oriented candidates who identify themselves with the values and ideals of the foundation. In addition to above-average academic performance, social commitment, as well as personal integrity, strength of character, cultural awareness, and tolerance are expected of the applicants. The scholarship holders receive special support by the foundation in Germany. The vast majority of the graduates finish their studies with a merit or a distinction.

The next assessment centre for scholarship candidates from Brazil and Argentina will take place in Rio de Janeiro in the autumn of 2016.
