XXV. National Forum

Tomorrow’s Brazil

The start of the National Forum brought together experts and decision-makers with the goal of discussing Brazil´s development and its future prospects. Prof. Dr. Christoph M. Schmidt, chairman of the German council of economic experts, held a key note speech at the headquarters of the Brazilian Development Bank BNDES. He had been invited by the KAS to Brazil in order to introduce the German system of Social Market Economy. In particular, the economic expert focused on the model’s resilience in times of crises and its capacity of promoting a socially just and sustainable development.

What exactly do we actually expect of an economic model? With this question, Dr. Schmidt began his lecture. The balance between fairness and an efficient market outcome appears as a challenge. Social policy as support for risk-taking and economic initiatives is therefore at the core of the model of the social market economy, which seeks to connect, according to one of the founding fathers Alfred Mueller Armack market efficiency with social compensation.
