In the 1990s, he was one of the initiators of the secret channel with the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) that led to the Oslo-Accords. Between 2001 and 2012, Ron was the director of the Peres Center for Peace.

Numerous Israelis and Palestinians appreciated his restless struggle for peace. As Justice Minister Tzipi Livni declared: “There are war heroes, but Ron was a peace hero. A Zionist who believed in peace and strived for it until the day he died, he wanted to contribute and push for peace, undeterred by extremists, cynics and the desperate.” Only recently, in light of the 20th anniversary of the Oslo accords, KAS Israel asked Ron to explain why Israel needs the two-state solution.
