Klarer Sieg mit Schönheitsfehlern –

Jemens Präsident Saleh im Amt bestätigt

Er zählt bereits zu den Urgesteinen der Herrscher der arabischen Welt und hat es noch einmal – wie zu erwarten war – geschafft: Jemens alter und neuer Präsident Ali Abdullah Saleh ging mit offiziellen 77,17 Prozent als eindeutiger Sieger aus den Präsidentschaftswahlen am 20. September 2006 hervor. Rund 9,2 Millionen Wahlberechtigte des 20 Millionen Einwohner zählenden Landes an der südlichen Spitze der Golf-Halbinsel waren aufgerufen, ihren Präsidenten zu wählen. Der bedeutendste Gegenkandidat der Joint Meeting Party (JMP), Faisal Ben Shamlan erreichte mit 21,82 Prozent für den jemenitischen Kontext ein deutliches Votum. Weit abgeschlagen fanden sich unabhängige Kandidaten wie Fathi Al-Azab (0,46 Prozent), Yassin Abduh Saeed ((0,40 Prozent) sowie Ahmed Al-Majeedi (0,15 Prozent) wieder. Nach offiziellen Angaben machten rund 58 Prozent der Wahlberechtigten von ihrem Stimmrecht Gebrauch.

Lebanon at a crossroad

On the eve of a possible international donors conference in Beirut and at the end of a long way of sad days, the Lebanon is in front of a crossroad, deciding about the eocnomic and social future of the country. In cooperation with the Lebanese Center for Policy Studies the KAS Amman Regional Office announces the new practical book “A socio-economic program for Lebanon”.

The Regional Program Near East/ Mediterranean and the Lebanese Center for Policy Studies continue their efforts to discuss the role and the understanding of political parties with the publication “Political Parties in the Arab World”. In the centre of this publication are the historical, organisational and ideological contexts of parties in the Arab world. Additionally, the authors take in consideration the national challenges and effects of the specific political systems.

KAS Amman Library: On Top of Progress in the Information Society

Last year Gerrit was studying for his exams at the oldest German library at the University of Heidelberg. After graduation he moved to the Middle East, in the “name of knowledge”. Through this change, the former student of political science was transformed into Mr. Gerrit F. Schlomach M.A., the scientific assistant at the Konrad Adenauer Foundation (KAS) Regional Office in Amman. His mission: Books! His objective: To develop a multilingual library as an open space of knowledge in Jordan. After the combined efforts of all participating forces and the deployment of WinISIS 1.5, the first step of the mission was completed at the beginning of 2006. As a result, more than 1,000 documented sources were reported to the Konrad Adenauer Foundation Headquarters in Berlin.

Arabische Stellungnahmen und Kommentare zur israelischen Parlamentswahl

Bei der israelischen Parlamentswahl vom 28. März 2006 ging die neu gegründete Kadima-Partei mit ihrem Spitzenkandidaten Ehud Olmert als Sieger hervor. Der Wahlkampf um die 120 Sitze in der Knesset erfolgte um die Themen des weiteren Rückzugs aus den Palästinenser-Gebieten sowie den Umgang mit der radikalen Hamas-Bewegung, die am selben Tag ihre Regierungsfunktion übernahm. Insgesamt fanden die Wahlen zur Knesset kaum Beachtung in der arabischen Öffentlichkeit, da von einem Regierungswechsel wenig erwartet oder die Wahl schlicht als innere Angelgenheit Israels abgetan wurde. Entsprechend der apathischen Grundstimmung obwiegt in den Stellungnahmen ausgewählter arabischer Politiker, regionaler Organisationen und Kommentatoren ein skeptischer Unterton, der Ausdruck der Sorge um die unilaterale Grenzziehung Israels und die Ausgrenzungspolitik gegenüber der Hamas ist.

Der Nahe und Mittlere Osten auf den Bildschirmen von EU und NATO

Betrachtet man die Vielfalt der europäischen politikwissenschaftlichen Fachliteratur der vergangenen Monate so fällt auf, daß der Nahe und Mittlere Osten nicht nur wegen der Dauerthemen Nahost- und Irakkonflikt beständig auf den Titelseiten verharrt. Die weiteren Themen drehen sich um Erfolge und Verbesserungsmöglichkeiten der westlichen Demokratisierungspolitik sowie um interne Reformprozesse und Liberalisierungsmaßnahmen. Neben der nationalstaatlich geprägten Perspektive tritt im zunehmenden Maße eine europäische und transatlantische hinzu, die die Beziehungen der beiden Stabilitätsanker Europäische Union und NATO mit der Region ins Visier nimmt.
