Prior to the Syrian crisis, the Lebanese economy had shown signs of vulnerability, manifested by low GDP, high inflation and a large informal labour market. The conflict in Syria and the influx of refugees into Lebanon has weakened an already fragile economy. Lebanon’s low economic activity rates, high unemployment and a large informal economy have been aggravated due to the increased pressure of over one million refugees. Demographic and economic shocks had a negative impact on the economy. This has affected both the host community and refugee population.
This research identifies factors that have impacted the livelihoods of both Lebanese nationals and Palestinian refugees in Lebanon, in light of the Syrian crisis. Both communities have been affected by the conflict and the consequences of a pre-existing weak social welfare system, corruption, poor legislation and migration pressures. By reflecting upon the difficulties faced by Palestinians and the Lebanese host community, this report aims to understand the challenges faced by both groups and the opportunities that could arise from tackling these issues together.
