Dr. Malte Gaier

Since May 2025, Dr Malte Gaier has been serving as Policy Officer in the Department for Europe, North America and Multilateral Dialogue, where he is responsible for the North Atlantic region (USA, Canada, UK/Ireland, Nordic countries, and the KAS offices in New York and Geneva). From 2021 to 2025, he headed the KAS Country Office for Tunisia and Libya, and from 2017 to 2021, the Country Office for Lebanon. His interim responsibilities included the Regional Program Political Dialogue and Regional Cooperation in the Southern Mediterranean (2024), the Regional Program Rule of Law Middle East and North Africa (2019/2020), and the Country Office Syria/Iraq (2018).From 2015 to 2017, Dr Gaier served as Desk Officer for the Levant in the Department for the Middle East and North Africa. He studied Communication Studies, History, and Islamic Studies in Erfurt, Vienna, and Cairo and is an alumnus of the KAS doctoral fellowship program. After completing his PhD on state ideologies and religious-political parties in the Middle East and South Asia, and following several research and work stays in both regions, he undertook his first foreign assignment for KAS as a trainee in India from 2012 to 2014.
