KASYP 16.4: Political Parties in European Parliamentary Democracy
The final module of KASYP Batch 16 brings young political leaders from Asia to Germany for an intensive programme exploring parliamentary democracy, political participation, federalism and the role of political parties.
From 27 September to 4 October 2026, participants of the Konrad Adenauer School for Young Politicians (KASYP) Batch 16 will travel to Frankfurt, Saarbrücken and Mainz for the fourth and final module of the programme, “Political Parties in European Parliamentary Democracy.”
The week-long programme provides participants with first-hand exposure to Germany’s political and parliamentary system and creates opportunities for dialogue with political representatives, government institutions, academia and young political leaders.
Understanding Parliamentary Democracy in Practice
A central focus of the module is to complement the participants’ previous KASYP training with practical insights into the functioning of democratic institutions and political parties in Germany. Through institutional visits and political discussions in Saarland and Rhineland-Palatinate, participants will explore different dimensions of parliamentary democracy, including political representation, federal structures, political participation and cooperation across different levels of government.
The programme includes learning visits to the Landtag of Saarland and the Landtag of Rhineland-Palatinate, as well as exchanges with representatives of political and governmental institutions. In Mainz, participants will further engage with perspectives from government, parliament and academia, providing opportunities to compare Germany’s democratic structures with political systems and experiences in their respective countries.
Connecting Young Leaders Across Asia and Europe
An important component of the programme will be “Youth Participation in Politics” in Saarbrücken on 28 September. The event will bring together young politicians from Asia, young scholars from South Asia and students from Germany. The exchange will provide a platform for participants from different political and cultural contexts to discuss the role of younger generations in democratic processes. It will also encourage dialogue on political participation, representation and the opportunities available to young people to contribute to public and political life.
Beyond institutional learning, these exchanges are intended to strengthen connections between emerging leaders from Asia and Europe and encourage participants to consider how experiences from different democratic systems can inform their own political engagement. By combining institutional visits, political dialogue, academic exchange and historical perspectives, KASYP 16.4 offers participants an opportunity to examine parliamentary democracy not only as a political system, but as an evolving process shaped by institutions, political parties and active citizen participation.
Concluding the KASYP Batch 16 Journey
As the fourth and final module, the programme in Germany marks the culmination of the KASYP Batch 16 learning journey. Throughout KASYP, participants have strengthened their knowledge and skills as emerging political leaders while building a regional network of peers committed to democratic governance and responsible political leadership.
The Germany module brings these experiences together in a European context, enabling participants to reflect on lessons from their KASYP journey, exchange perspectives across regions and consider how these insights can contribute to their future roles in political and public life. Through KASYP, the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung Regional Programme Political Dialogue Asia continues to support the development of young political leaders and foster dialogue, democratic participation and international cooperation across Asia and beyond.
