Workshop
Details
On March 22, 2012, an international workshop on “Food Security and Food Safety – Perspectives for Regional and Global Cooperation” took place at the European Policy Centre in Brussels. This workshop in the context of the "EU-Asia Dialogue" involved policy-makers and researchers from Asia and Europe. Among others, the European Commission Directorate-General for Agriculture and Rural Development, the Cambodian Ministry of Economy and Finance, the Vietnamese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the International Rice Research Institute in the Philippines and the Food Security Centre at the University of Hohenheim sent representatives to this event. The aim was to exchange different perspectives on food insecurity, identify challenges as well as prospects for common policies. Also policy recommendations were developed and further steps that need to be taken in the context of the "EU-Asia Dialogue" were discussed. Since researchers and policymakers from both Europe and Asia were present, the discussions were very detailed and brought in various perspectives on the topic. Thus, the group was able to identify areas for common action and topics the “EU-Asia Dialogue” could deal with. In particular, topics with regard to governance, international cooperation between Asia and Europe and the impacts policies implemented in one of the regions have on the other region were mentioned as being of common interest.
