Citizen journalism in times of crisis - Regional Programme Gulf States
Workshop
Details
After the UN-backed transformation process in Yemen failed in autumn 2014 due to the Houthi takeover, clashes grew increasingly. The escalation reached its preliminary peak with the continuing Saudi-led military intervention since March 2015. As a consequence, large parts of the country are at war.
The work of independent journalists is subject to increasing repressive measures of the Houthi rebels. Moreover, local media's affiliation with political elites makes them turn into a weapon in the struggle for political influence. Hence, they rather contribute to escalation than to fulfill their informative function.
Against this background, a training workshop on conflict-sensitive reporting shall contribute to a free and independent media landscape in Yemen. Jan Keulen, a media development expert with longstanding experience in the Middle East, will be the trainer during the workshop taking place in Amman on 7 – 9 September 2015.
The workshop participants shall be made aware of the responsible role of journalism in times of crisis. Based on the results of Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung's workshop on Yemen's media landscape in transition 2014, strategies of citizen journalism and media literacy in the Yemeni context will be developed. As representatives of tomorrow's civil society the participants shall be early prepared to support effective democratic structures in Yemen and thereby actively accompany the process of long-term peace.
