This workshop was held, as part of a series on “Mapping Constitutional Control in the MENA Region,” on the 12th and 13th of March 2018  in Cadenabbia, Italy. At this meeting experts from the MENA region and Germany discussed constitutional review procedures in Morocco, Tunisia, Libya, Mauretania, Egypt, Bahrain, Kuwait and Germany.

The objective of the workshop was to examine existing procedures for the protection of fundamental rights within the constitutional framework in the MENA countries, their use and effects. Achievements and challenges regarding already existing and newly introduced procedures were discussed as well as jurisprudence and its impacts, recent trends and reforms for an efficient and effective handling of procedures which aim at the protection of individual rights.

The event facilitated a comparative intercultural exchange between MENA countries, underlining the mechanisms of constitutional control in the region with cross sectional studies that allowed linking up the discussions with debates and developments in Europe and beyond.
