Youth unemployment in South Africa remains a critical issue, with recent statistics indicating a staggering 45,5% unemployment rate among youth (15- 35 years old). The situation is particularly acute for those holding humanities degrees, who may face the misconception that their educational background lacks practical value in the job market. However, in a world marked by rapid digitalisation, climate change, and shifting geopolitical landscapes, the skills cultivated through humanities education are more essential than ever.

Orientation Workshop for traditional Leaders in Zomba (Malawi)

On 1st and 2nd August 2018, another workshop for traditional leaders took place at Chikale Teachers Development Centre in Senior Traditional Authority Chikowi, in Zomba. For two days, 45 participants were introduced to the new land law in Malawi. The workshop was financed by KAS and carried out in cooperation with the organisation partners National Association for Smallholder Farmers in Malawi (NASFAM) and LandNet Malawi.

The Annual KAS/SAIIA Careers Evening in Cape Town

On October 2, 2018, the Konrad Adenauer Foundation (KAS) in cooperation with the South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA) organized its annual careers evening for students of the Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Cape Town (UCT). The event offered participants the opportunity to inform themselves and exchange ideas about career opportunities, career paths, scholarships and internships.

On the 20th of September, the Konrad Adenauer Foundation South Africa (KAS) in cooperation with the South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA) and Transformation Research Unit (TRU) - University of Stellenbosch hosted the book launch of “Democracy under Threat – A Crisis of Legitimacy?” edited by Ursula van Beek. The event was held at the Headquarter of SAIIA. It was attended by over fifty delegates consisting of diplomats, politicians, academics as well as students.

Social Cohesion Conference seeks to create conversations around burning issues

On the 26th of September 2018 our partner Development Democracy Program in conjunction with the Durban University of Technology, Peace Oasis International and the Konrad Adenauer Foundation held its first International Social Cohesion in Durban, aimed at elevating and deliberating conversations about social cohesion above race, and unearth other causes of divisions in the society. The conference was attended by civil society, political leaders, youth, academics as well as ordinary citizens from all over KZN and other provinces.

Traditional Leadership and Authority versus Local Government

The Coexistence of Traditional and Local Governance Structures in a Democratic Dispensation: Challenges and Successes

On the 13th and 14th of September, the Konrad Adenauer Foundation in cooperation with the North-West University (NWU) hosted a conference on the topic ‘Traditional Leadership and Authority versus Local Government’ in Potchefstroom. The overall objective of the conference is to explore and engage in a practical fashion with the interactions between traditional leadership and a modern democracy based on constitutional values such as human dignity, equality and freedom. The conference was attended by 64 participants representing the academia, local government as well as traditional leadership.

Annual KAS-SAIIA Careers Evening 2018 (Gauteng)

On 7 August 2018, the Konrad Adenauer Foundation in cooperation with the South African Institute of International Affairs hosted the annual KAS-SAIIA Humanities Careers Evening 2018. This year event, which followed on the success of the previous ones, carried the theme of “Unlimited paths with your humanities degree”. 312 participants, including recent humanities graduates and current students from Gauteng-based universities were exposed to the different career paths and opportunities available to them after the completion of their degrees.

On 21 August, the Centre for Constitutional Rights (CFCR) and the South African Institute for Advanced Constitutional, Public, Human Rights and International Law (SAIFAC), a Centre of the University of Johannesburg with the support of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation South Africa organized a discussion session on the Zimbabwe general elections which took place on 30 July 2018.

The round table discussion on 29 August 2018 focused on this future-shaping phenomenon and was jointly organized by the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, the National Planning Commission (NPC) and the Business School of Johannesburg. The event was part of a world-wide discussion series.
