In an era defined by disinformation and declining trust in public institutions, the role of independent journalism has never been more critical. The M20 Summit 2025 aims to respond to this global moment with an important agenda: to place media and information integrity at the heart of international cooperation.
Held in Johannesburg from 1–2 September 2025, the Summit is the centrepiece of the M20 programme - an initiative by SANEF, Media Monitoring Africa (MMA), and partners, running in parallel to the G20 process under South Africa’s presidency.
The Summit will bring together a wide spectrum of actors - including journalists, editors, digital rights advocates, academics, AU and G20 officials - to explore the intersection of journalism, policy, and technology. Its themes include:
- Information integrity, public interest content and journalism as a public good
- Media viability, trust and credibility
- Artificial intelligence and copyright in the media space
- Perspectives on environmental and climate change reporting
- Online safety and child protection
The two-day conference will feature keynote addresses, high-level panels, expert roundtables and opportunities for cross-sector networking. It also facilitates dialogue between media stakeholders and official G20 working groups, amplifying the voices of African and Global South actors in global policy spaces.
