Survey on “Macedonia’s EU Integration”

The Institute for Democracy “Societas Civilis” Skopje (IDSCS), supported by the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, office in the Republic of Macedonia (KAS), conducted a public opinion survey on the topic “Macedonia’s EU Integration”. The survey was conducted by telephone interviews in the period 10-15 September 2014, on a national representative sample of 1002 respondents, with a marginal error of ±3.1%.

The results show that:

1. Support for the European integration of Macedonia is high. A large majority of the respondents (80%) said that if there is a referendum for Macedonia‘s entry in the EU, they will vote in favor, while a small minority of 14% will be against.

2. The majority of Macedonian citizens support Macedonian’s EU membership, if there are no conditions over the state’s name. Almost two thirds of the respondents (63%) would support entering the EU without concessions over the name of the state, while a quarter of the respondents (26%) would lend their support despite a change in the name.

3. Half of the population thinks that Macedonia is ready for EU membership. Fifty one percent think that Macedonia is ready for EU membership, while 42% think it is not.

4. The citizens are divided in their evaluation of the progress in the EU integration process over the last year. Almost half of the respondents (47%) have an opinion that Macedonia advanced in the process, while 20% think that the advancements are small. Almost one third (31%) of the respondents consider that progress is lacking or there was a regress.

5. Nearly half of the citizens do not expect anything new from the forthcoming EU Progress Report. Almost every second respondent (48%) says the Report will be the same as last year, while 28% think that it will show progress. One of five respondents expect that the Report will show regress of Macedonia’s EU integration.

6. The citizens believe that the main reason why Macedonia is not a part of the EU is the obstruction by the neighboring countries. This opinion is prevalent among 59% of the respondents, which represents an increase in comparison to March 2014, when this opinion was shared by 48%. The failure to implement domestic reforms is the main reason for 29% of the respondents. The reluctance of EU to accept Macedonia as a member state is most important reason for 7%, which is a significant decline from March 2014.
