In journalism, it’s not just about the big global issues, but also what’s happening right outside our door. It’s the local news – stories around us and about us – that truly move us. The Konrad Adenauer Foundation’s Media Programme for Sub-Saharan Africa therefore awards the KAS Media Africa Award for Local Journalism every year for outstanding journalistic reporting in this field.
Support for Local Newsrooms
Local journalists face the challenging task of reporting national and international news at a local level, while also finding compelling stories within their own region. Especially in years like the "big election year" 2024, when elections are held in 18 African countries, local journalism plays a crucial role in ensuring accurate, unbiased, and independent election reporting. It is the backbone of journalism, yet often receives inadequate support.
Criteria for the Award
The goal of the award is to support local journalists and editorial teams who stand out through excellent, creative, and responsible reporting at the regional level. It aims to foster the development of local journalism and strengthens the exchange of experiences and best practices between African journalists and international media. The submitted projects must be in English or French and can include media from print, television, radio, and online, as well as projects on social media.
Expert Jury Selects the Winners
An internationally composed jury of journalists and media experts from Africa (et al. Kenya, Mali, South Africa) and Germany will then select the most outstanding stories based on high journalistic standards. The winners of the award will have the opportunity to participate in programmes and events that promote the exchange of ideas and methods. These include conferences, discussion panels, and workshops.
