Details

Against the background of various reform projects regarding constitutional jurisdiction in countries of the MENA region and the associated accompanying introduction of new constitutional procedures for the protection of fundamental rights (e.g., "question prioritaire de constitutionnalité"), the Rule of Law Programme Middle East / North Africa of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung is organizing in cooperation with the Lebanese Constitutional Council on March 22, 2018, an workshop with international constitutional law experts in Beirut, Lebanon.

As part of the event, judges from the Algerian, Egyptian, Kuwaiti, Lebanese and Moroccan Constitutional Courts and Councils will present both the status quo in constitutional jurisdiction in the respective countries and current developments that present experiences with newly introduced procedures and reform perspectives. The participation of European constitutional law experts will connect the discussions to developments in other legal systems outside the Arab world.

The event provides a platform for knowledge exchange on a topic of increasing interest to several Arab Constitutional Courts and Councils. Thus, progress and challenges in dealing with the newly introduced procedures will be discussed and necessary changes for the efficient and targeted handling of individual rights protection in individual countries will be identified, with special emphasis on constitutional review in Lebanon.
