Symposium

Jordan and Germany in the Middle East

Dealing with Crises and Shaping the Future

The Middle East conflict is currently going through another wave of violent escalation. This comes against the background of new dynamics in the Middle East, including recent rapprochements among several regional actors. At the same time, unresolved conflicts, like the ones related to Palestine or Syria, continue to prevent lasting stability. In addition, the global geopolitical landscape is changing with potential repercussions on both the Middle East and Europe. Considering these developments, continued and frank dialogue between Jordan and Germany is of special importance. Both countries share a history of seventy years of cooperation and have been trusted political partners. How can Amman and Berlin work together to de-escalate regional conflicts and shape a more peaceful future? How can both countries best exploit the potential of cooperation in fields of mutual interests, such as energy or skilled labor? How do Jordan and Germany define their position in the emerging new regional and global order and how could that affect their bilateral relations?

Perspectives of European Foreign and Security Policy in the Mediterranean

on the Eve of the German EU Council Presidency

On the occasion of the German EU Council Presidency, the Regional Program Near East / Mediterranean of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung publishes the proceedings of the conference on “Perspectives of European Foreign and Security Policy in the Mediterranean on the Eve of the German EU Council Presidency“. Based on the concept of enlarged security, the contributions shed light on risk perceptions (terrorism, WMD, regional conflicts, migration etc.) in Europe as well as in selected Southern countries (among them Tunisia, Turkey, Morocco, Israel, Jordan). There is a major focus on the expectations and hopes of the southern partners towards Europe as well as the chances and possibilities of NATO and EU to support peaceful cooperation in the region. These proceedings are mainly the fruit of a conference with the same name, organized by the KAS Regional Program Near East / Mediterranean on 15. to 16. September 2006 in Antalya- Turkey.

Dialogue With the Arab World Top Priority

According to the New President of the European Parliament

“Relations with the Arab world are the major theme of the future,” said Hans-Gert Pöttering, newly-elected president of the European Parliament, at his first press conference, as reported by EUX.TV on January 2007, 16. The EP president and former leader of the EPP-ED group in the EP perceived the continuous Euro-Med Conference as a crucial cornerstone to improve relations especially among civil societies.A strategic position in this major policy field includes the cooperation between parliamentarians and political parties. In this context, Pöttering’s EPP-ED group in cooperation with the Regional Program Near East / Mediterranean of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung started already in December 2006 an initiative to strengthen the Euro-Med Dialog through an informal network of political parties.
