Training of Teachers: How to Teach Politics at School

by Mona Deeb
The KAS Jordan Office, in cooperation with the Jordanian Centre for Civic Education (JCCE), held the first of four training workshops for Social Studies teachers on 13-14 February. The updated Social Studies curriculum, introduced by the National Center for Curriculum Development (NCCD), includes critical topics such as political parties, human rights and elections, which require innovative teaching strategies to engage students effectively. The teachers’ training workshops, which KAS and JCCE launched in 2023, focus on democracy and political participation and aim to equip teachers with the necessary knowledge and skills to deliver these topics effectively to their students. The workshops include teachers with disabilities who are actively teaching social studies, bringing the project in line with HM King Abdullah’s directives for inclusion of persons with disabilities in the educational system.

KAS and JCCE revised the Civic Education Textbook for Teachers, “Ana Muwaten (I Am a Citizen),” in 2025. This new version, which expands on the concepts and creative activities introduced in the original textbook, will be distributed among the teachers attending the workshops, as well as their colleagues.

During her welcoming remarks at the first Training of Teachers workshop, Veronika Ertl, Resident Representative of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation in Jordan, thanked long-standing KAS partner, JCCE director Mona Al Alami, for her commitment to education. She also thanked the participating teachers for their crucial role in helping students become active citizens. On the second day, Dr. Asma Al Sharab, Head of the Humanities Department at the Curriculum Administration (MoE), and Social Studies Curriculum Development Coordinator at the NCCD, answered the participants’ questions about the revised social studies curriculum and committed to work on solving any problems they presented regarding the revised textbooks.
