First Reporter Slam South Africa in Johannesburg

The entertaining live competition, in which journalists present their media stories in a creative way, is coming to Johannesburg, South Africa!

KAS Media Africa and Media Monitoring Africa are presenting the first Reporter Slam South Africa on 15 October 2025 as part of the Media Freedom Festival 2025. This time, journalists from South Africa and Germany will present their courageous work.

Details

On 15 October 2025, the first Reporter Slam South Africa will take place in Johannesburg. Five Journalists from across the country and one journalist from Germany will compete live against each other, giving the audience a behind-the-scenes glimpse into their experiences as reporters and editors. The added challenge: Their stories must be presented in a unique and creative way within ten minutes. The slammer whose story appeals most to the audience will win the competition.

2. Alpha Ramushwana, Politics and Governance Journalist at EyeWitness News

3. Koena Mashale, Governance and Social Justice Journalist at Sowetan Newspaper

4. Pieter-Louis Myburgh, Investigative Journalist at Daily Maverick 

5. Farangies Ghafoor, Health and Lifestyle Journalist at Tagesspiegel

6. Prashalan Govender, Social Justice Reporter at The Witness

The Slam is part of the Media Freedom Festival, scheduled for 14–16 October 2025 organised by Media Monitoring Africa and supported by the KAS Media Programme. The festival focuses on ongoing challenges in the Sub-Saharan media landscape. For more information click here
