The next Media Freedom Festival in Johannesburg, South Africa, is scheduled from 14 to 16 October 2025. This year's theme “Resilient Media for a Resilient Democracy: Navigating the Future of Information" will feature speeches and discussions on technological upheaval and economic sustainability, as well as topics such as journalist safety, dealing with disinformation and the erosion of public trust.
This three-day event will bring together journalists, media practitioners, legal experts and members of civil society to discuss important issues related to media freedom, the impact of artificial intelligence on journalism and hate speech, to name a few. These discussions will be informed by the upcoming G20 summit in November, an eagerly awaited event around the world. If you would like to join the Media Freedom Festival, please register here.
One highlight of the festival will be the Reporter Slam South Africa. Here, five South African and one German journalist will take to the stage to tell entertaining media stories. For further information click here.
