This year’s Newsroom Leadership Workshop Strengthens Conflict Management Skills Across Africa

The Aga Khan University’s Graduate School of Media and Communication (GSMC) and KAS Media Africa celebrate another successful collaboration - and GSMC’s 10th anniversary!

Over five intensive days in Nairobi, Kenya, 14 newsroom managers from Kenya, South Africa, Uganda, the DRC, Nigeria, Malawi, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Ghana, Ethiopia, and Lesotho took part in a specialised workshop designed to strengthen conflict management and leadership skills in African newsrooms. The training, hosted by the Graduate School of Media and Communications at Aga Khan University with the support of KAS Media Africa, responded to the everyday pressures of editorial environments where tight deadlines, diverse viewpoints, and fast-moving stories can give rise to conflict.

Led by experienced facilitators from across the media sector, participants engaged deeply with strategies for navigating change, fostering constructive dialogue, and implementing conflict-resolution approaches that support healthier newsroom cultures. Sessions also explored gender relations within editorial teams and highlighted the importance of emotional intelligence as a core leadership competency.

As part of the programme, the cohort visited two of Kenya’s major media houses - Nation Media Group and Royal Media Services - gaining firsthand exposure to how leading newsrooms balance editorial demands, manage teams, and uphold professional standards in rapidly evolving media landscapes.

The workshop concluded with renewed commitment from participants to apply these tools in their own organisations, strengthening newsroom leadership and resilience across the region.

KAS Media Africa also joined GSMC in celebrating its 10th anniversary - marking a decade of excellence in journalism and media education. We are proud to collaborate with The Aga Khan University’s Graduate School for Media and Communications on initiatives that advance professional growth, innovation, and newsroom sustainability, and we look forward to continued partnership in the years ahead.
